Copyediting and proofreading are two similar editing processes, each with a distinct scope. Both entail the review of written translated or foreign materials to ensure clarity, terminology localization, and that the final material is correct, concise, and free of error. The primary difference is that copyediting is a bilingual review, while proofreading is monolingual.

 

When a copyedit is needed, a reviewer with expertise in both languages and the subject matter of the file completes a line-by-line comparison review of the original source text to the target translated text, applying corrections as they work, to yield a final output that utilizes the proper terminology for the subject matter, is translated to the highest level of accuracy, and features no spelling and/or grammar errors.

 

Proofreading entails the review of a translated document alone to gauge flow and overall understanding of the content; the reviewer is an expert in the target language and subject matter, and implements corrections as they work to correct any spelling, grammar, and typo mistakes, as well as to ensure overall comprehension of the file. The original source file under this scope is referenced only as/if needed for comprehension of a particular area.
