Interpretation

Interpretation is the facilitation of a conversation between two or more individuals who speak different languages. This service can be requested in one of two flows: consecutive or simultaneous.

Consecutive interpretations include an interpreter specialized in this workflow, as well as expert knowledge in both languages needed and the subject matter of the conversation. The specialist listens to the content in-language of a speaker and repeats the content to the listener in their understood language. The process is then repeated as many times and directionally swapping until the conversation concludes. This method is primarily utilized in one-on-one or small group conversations.

Simultaneous interpretations include an interpreter specialized in this workflow, as well as the access to and use of specific technology/equipment, as well as knowledge in both languages needed and the subject matter of the conversation. In this workflow, the specialist interprets the information verbally in the language of the listener at the same time as they are hearing it in the other language being spoken by the presenter. Because both the listening and speaking are done by the interpreter in real time and are happening simultaneously, specific equipment is required to channel the input and output specifically as to not interfere with the interpreter's focus. Typically, noise-cancelling headphones are present for the interpreter to hear the information, while a microphone is used to disseminate the information in the new language. Because two speakers are speaking at the same time in different languages, this does not promote an environment conductive to back-and-forth conversation. This method is primarily utilized for large meetings, summits, and/or conferences. Usually, recipients are either listening to the interpreter via headphones or are located in a separate room where only the interpreter's voice can be heard, to eliminate confusion or interference from the two individuals speaking at once.

Each type of interpretation has three modes in which it can be held: face-to-face (F2F), over the phone (OPI), or virtual remote (VRI). The mode is based on client preference or requirements, as well as specialist availability.
